Roy Marvin Olsen, age 88, “graduated” to heaven on October 16, 2016, after a brief stay at Legacy House Hospice, Ocala, FL.
Roy was born in Albany, New York on January 23, 1928, to Roy F. and Mildred Olsen and spent much of his childhood in Muskegon, Michigan. Due to a heart defect, Roy was unable to serve in the military as he had hoped. He graduated from Braintree High School, MA, in 1946 and attended night classes at Northeastern University, Boston. In 1951, he married the love of his life, Evamaie Hedman at Central Baptist Church in Quincy and they were blessed with 65 years together.
Roy was employed as assistant parts manager at Carriker Motors and Stonberg Motors of Quincy, and parts manager at Wolfe-Sullivan in Hingham. He worked for Bethlehem Steel at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, heading up inventory control, and was eventually sent to their Brooklyn 56th St. Yard, New York, as supervisor of spare parts. Nuclear ships that he worked on were the USS Long Beach and the USS Bainbridge.
In 1964, General Dynamics Co. hired Roy as warehouse supervisor for their Quincy Yard (formerly Fore River). He obtained top secret clearance and worked in support of the submarine and Apollo programs.
Roy and Eva moved to Clearwater, Florida where he was service manager at Clearwater Nissan and Highlands Chrysler. After moving to Ocala, Roy and Eva both worked for the cruise ship port authority in Tampa, Roy as head of security. Roy and Eva were active members of the Tampa Railroaders and enjoyed participating in fundraisers and other community events.
Roy loved major league baseball, puzzles, games of all kinds, and was especially ruthless at Skip-Bo! His nieces and nephews have fond memories of special times spent together with Uncle Roy.
Roy was predeceased by his brothers Jack Olsen and Carl Olsen. He is survived by his beloved wife Evamaie and numerous nieces and nephews: Kenneth Brown, Santa Clarita, CA; Donald Hedman, Titusville, FL; Jonathan Hedman, Gray, ME; Ruth Tucker, Lake Stevens, WA; David Hedman, Lompoc, CA; Eben Hedman, Burlington, WA; Robert Brown, Marshfield, MA; Kevin Brown, Aloha, OR; Karen St. Clair, New Boston, NH; Roy Brown, Lander, WY.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Munroe Regional Hospital and Legacy House Hospice for their care and kindness toward Roy and Eva. Final arrangements were made through “A Direct Cremation” of Summerfield, FL.
Roy was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Ocala, FL and his hope and trust was in Jesus as his savior.
